In our time of global, national and individual sorrow, I would like to
offer some thoughts. My heart and prayers go out to each and every one
of you. It does not matter where we live, only that we DO live in this
world. We have all been wounded, we have all been touched in a way that
we never dreamed possible before yesterday. We all are in pain, and we
all need to heal. We have got to find a way to go on from this, to heal
collectively and individually, spiritually and personally. Let us all
join the global community. Let us all reach out and help someone, the
loved one, the friend and the stranger.
The best that I can do today is to offer you some quotes:
"There is no despair so absolute as that which comes with the first
moments of our first great sorrow, when we have not yet known what it is
to have suffered and be healed, to have despaired and have recovered
hope."
-- George Eliot
"Mourning is not forgetting... It is an undoing. Every [tiny] tie has to
be untied and something permanent and valuable recovered and assimilated
from the dust."
-- Margery Allingham
"In every community, there is work to be done.
In every nation, there are wounds to heal.
In every heart, there is the power to do it."
-- Marianne Williamson
"If we say that monsters [people who do terrible evil] are beyond
forgiving, we give them a power they should never have... they are given
the power to keep their evil alive in the hearts of those who suffered
most. We give them power to condemn their victims to live forever with
the hurting memory of their painful pasts. We give the monsters the last
word."
-- Lewis B. Smedes
"When we hate our enemies, we are giving them power over us: power over
our sleep, our appetites, our blood pressure, our health, and our
happiness. Our enemies would dance with joy if only they knew how they
were worrying us, lacerating us, and getting even with us! Our hate is
not hurting them at all, but our hate is turning our own days and nights
into a hellish turmoil."
-- Dale Carnegie
"Not to forgive is to be imprisoned by the past, by old grievances that
do not permit life to proceed with new business. Not to forgive is to
yield oneself to another's control... to be locked into a sequence of
act and response, of outrage and revenge, tit for tat, escalating
always. The present is endlessly overwhelmed and devoured by the past.
Forgiveness frees the forgiver. It extracts the forgiver from someone
else's nightmare."
-- Lance Morrow
"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which
you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to
yourself, 'I lived through this horror.
I can take the next thing that comes along.'"
-- Eleanor Roosevelt
And a last thought for us all:
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me
Let There Be Peace on Earth
The peace that was meant to be
With God as our Father
Brothers all are we
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
With ev'ry step I take
Let this be my solemn vow;
To take each moment and live
Each moment in peace eternally
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me
May the Creator bless each and every one of you with comfort, and the
healing that we must all embrace. We are all in this together.
Sibyl
