Welcome Letter
By Sibyl Dream Walker
Welcome, greetings and Ya'ah'he! I hope that for those of you in the U.S., your Mother's day was a good one. This has been a hard week for us, and Mother's day was blessed, but full of mixed emotions. We have had a very painful thing happen to us as a family this week, full of hard lessons and growth for all of us. Since it involves others who are not a part of the family, I do not feel comfortable sharing the details, but suffice it to say, this has been hard. We will emerge stronger, no doubt, and wiser, but working through pain that has arrived unannounced, and over which we have NO control has led me to again, share the Serenity Prayer with you:
God grant me the wisdom to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference.
I find this prayer so profound, every time I say it. Finding the wisdom to know the difference between the things in our lives that we can change and the things that we can't is a life-long task, I think.
May is a month of mixed emotions for me anyway, full of celebration and sadness. Besides Mother's day, there is the anniversary of my Mother's death, my beloved sister Kim's birthday and my oldest son's birthday. Lots of ups and downs there! Added to this is the fact that it is already reaching temperatures of over 100 degrees here in Southern Arizona, and I am lucky I am still able to get up in the morning! Looks to be a long hot summer here.
I hope that you enjoy this week's newsletter.

IT TAKES COURAGE
by Robert Knowlton, Executive Coach
"Listening to your heart is not simple. Finding out who you are is not simple. It takes a lot of hard work and courage to get to know who you are and what you want."
-- Sue Bender
How does a person find the time, space, inclination and direction to understand his or her self and unique purpose? What seems to stop the flow of true, natural, purposeful action?
Your purpose is your gift to the world. It is a sacred source for you to connect with and contribute to others at a deep and powerful level. I have heard many times from clients in all walks of life, "Yeah, but how do I do it? How do I live aligned with my purpose?"
I believe it begins and ends with Courage -- the Courage to trust your heart, trust your values, and to trust yourself.
It takes courage to open up, to ask for what you want and courage to face your truth. Some say it takes courage to be real and to be authentically You.
So what stops us from being real, from living on purpose?
In my own life it has been fear. The fear of showing vulnerability. The fear of being judged. The fear of
rejection, fear of failure, fear of being alone, fear of the unknown, of uncertainty, and in the end, it seems to be the fear of losing my "life".
I have come to realize (and of course you must arrive at your own conclusions) that no one, no situation, no experience, can take away my purpose. Eventually, one way or another I will die. But, in the process of living, I am the one who is responsible for living my own purposeful life. A life and a truth that belongs to this moment only, to this opportunity to live fully.
How can I live in this moment fully? What courage do I need to call on? I summon my courage to let go of perceived past wrongs, of regrets, hurts, and of old longings. I work to own the memories, the true lessons learned, thoughts and images of joy and of love, of compassion and caring. I let go of blaming and anger; release jealousy, envy and any feelings of scarcity, helplessness, hopelessness and worthlessness.
As humans, we heal and build at the same time. Both take courage. You decide when you are ready to move to the next step in your purposeful evolution. Look around. You'll find a book, a friend, a coach, a spiritual guide or teacher to help you uncover your own true connection to yourself, your truth and your purpose. Maybe you will be that friend, guide or teacher for another, which will be part of your healing journey to Authentic Purposefulness.
No matter where you are in this evolutionary process, there is room to grow. We all face our own challenges to live fulfilling, passionate and compassionate lives.
I am truly grateful for others who showed me through books, stories and in the way they live their life that I can live on purpose and be happy. The key ingredient, I have learned, is Courage.
It takes courage to accept responsibility for my own success and happiness. The courage to live on Purpose. The courage to be real.

Smudging
By Sibyl McLendon
Smudging is a very old American Indian ritual. It is done to cleanse people, places and things. It is believed that using smoke from a sacred substance can clear away negativity, and make the participants ready for ceremony and only able to speak the truth. Smudging a home can clear away negative vibrations and entities, if done properly.
The materials used for smudging vary slightly from area to area. In the East and Middle America, the smudge used was traditionally sweet grass. In other areas, including the Southwest, it is sage. This is not the cooking herb! Sage grass grows wild in the Southwest, and it is different than the herb. Smudge can usually be purchased in what is called "bundles" from a variety of new age stores, or stores that specialize in Native products. Many times the sage will be mixed with cedar or lavender. This is fine. It can also be purchased in many places on the Internet. If all else fails, you can use cedar incense.
Once you have your smudge stick, what you want to do is to hold it in your hand with something underneath it to catch the falling embers as you smudge. Traditionally this is a large abalone shell, but even an ashtray will suffice. You will light the end of the bundle, and then blow it out, just as if it were incense. Then you want to sweep the smoke over yourself before you do any smudging of objects or other people. Traditionally, a smudge feather is used, but you can just use your hands to direct the smoke.
Now if your intention is to smudge your home, or some other dwelling, you need to make sure that a window is open, even if it just a crack. You can also leave the door open. This is because you must leave somewhere for any negativity that you are driving out of the dwelling has somewhere to exit. Then just go from room to room, sweeping the smoke around, into every corner, every closet, everywhere that you can. The scent is invigorating. You might want to do this on a regular basis.
If you are starting any ceremony or ritual, you will want to smudge everyone involved. You can just pass it around and let everyone smudge themselves. Prayers can be said during this to draw down the Above Beings.
Now, when you are finished, you will want to put out your smudge stick. To do this, stick the lit end into some dirt or sand. If you put it under water, you will have a difficult time relighting it when you want to use it the next time.
I have seen some really miraculous things happen while smudging. Do not do it lightly, but in a prayerful and respectful manner and it will be of great benefit to all.

The Color of Friendship
Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel.
All claimed that they were the best.
The most important.
The most useful.
The favorite.
Green said:
"Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was
chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Without me, all animals would die. Look
over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority."
Blue interrupted:
"You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is
the water that is the basis of life and drawn up by the clouds from the deep
sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my peace, you would
all be nothing."
Yellow chuckled:
"You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety, and warmth into the
world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are yellow. Every
time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me
there would be no fun."
Orange started next to blow her trumpet:
"I am the color of health and strength. I may be scarce, but I am precious
for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most important vitamins.
Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges, mangoes, and papayas. I don't hang
around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty
is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you."
Red could stand it no longer he shouted out:
"I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood - life's blood! I am the color
of danger and of bravery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire
into the blood. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am
the color of passion and of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and the
poppy."
Purple rose up to his full height:
He was very tall and spoke with great pomp: "I am the color of royalty and
power. Kings, chiefs, and bishops have always chosen me for I am the sign of
authority and wisdom. People do not question me! They listen and obey."
Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with just
as much determination: "Think of me. I am the color of silence. You hardly
notice me, but without me you all become superficial. I represent thought
and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need me for balance and
contrast, for prayer and inner peace."
And so the colors went on boasting, each convinced of his or her own
superiority. Their quarreling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a
startling flash of bright lightening thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started
to pour down relentlessly. The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close
to one another for comfort.
In the midst of the clamor, rain began to speak:
"You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate
the rest. Don't you know that you were each made for a special purpose,
unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me."
Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands.
The rain continued:
"From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a
great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The Rainbow
is a sign of hope for tomorrow." And so, whenever a good rain washes the
world, and a Rainbow appears in the sky, let us remember to appreciate one
another.

And pray to these spirits all across this land
Show me the plan so I can lead
Indeed stop the prejudice, hate and greed
Plant my seed uplift hope to raise

And teach him all of our beliefs
Introduce him to Joseph the Chief
Please my son...put down the gun
Stand up and fight and refuse to run
I make this your quest ...It's your mission
Your decision... speak out to all the prisons
And every Indian Nation

The Power Of Music
I Have a Dream
Lyrics: Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus
Vocals: Abba
Album: Voulez-Vous
I have a dream, a song to sing
To help me cope with anything
If you see the wonder of a fairy tale
You can take the future even if you fail
I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see
I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me
I'll cross the stream - I have a dream
I have a dream, a fantasy
To help me through reality
And my destination makes it worth the while
Pushing through the darkness still another mile
I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see
I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me
I'll cross the stream - I have a dream
I'll cross the stream - I have a dream
I have a dream, a song to sing
To help me cope with anything
If you see the wonder of a fairy tale
You can take the future even if you fail
I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see
I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me
I'll cross the stream - I have a dream
I'll cross the stream - I have a dream

Cultivating Happiness
We always seem to want those things we don't have. Moreover, we are often convinced that if we had those things we want so
badly, we would finally be happy.
Singles who want to be in a relationship often believe once they are in one they will finally be happy. Those in shaky
relationships hope their relationship will work out, because having worked it out will finally make them happy.
"I will be happy when I am in love." "I will be happy when he/she does really loves me." "I will be happy when I know he
or she is committed to me." "I will be happy when my husband/wife is more considerate." Sound familiar?
The truth is that happiness is an attitude. It's not something created by outside circumstances, but instead is completely
within your control. This means that you can be happy regardless of whether you are in a relationship or not. You can
be happy regardless of whether your relationship is working out or not. If fact, if you cultivate happiness, your relationship
will improve.
You will not get that deep sense of satisfaction and happiness you crave just by getting or improving a relationship. Nothing
will give you that sense of happiness, unless you cultivate it consciously.
Is the glass half empty or half full? Life and relationships work better when the glass is half full. Below are some simple
yet specific steps you can take to cultivate happiness and see the glass half full, regardless of your relationship status.
1. Be grateful
Create a sense of gratitude for what you have, for what is working, for what is wonderful and sweet in your life. A
morning or evening gratitude list, written each day, can do wonders for helping you feel grateful.
2. Take care of yourself
Identify the small things in life that make you feel good, and do one daily. A short walk, a few minutes of writing in your
journal, a short meditation, watching the sunset. Whatever reminds you that you are a human being and not a human doing
will improve your outlook on life.
3. Be creative
Creativity and self-expression generate happiness. Schedule some creative time each day, even if it's just a few minutes of
writing, painting, sculpting, etc.
4. Move
Moving our bodies generates feel-good hormones called endorphins. Move a little every day to stay happy.
5. Get someone to take care of you
It feels good to be taken care of, even in small ways. Get a massage, a manicure, someone to carry your groceries, launder
your clothes, or fix something for you.
6. Read inspirational material
It helps to be reminded of positive thoughts and positive attitudes. Get a small book of positive, inspirational thoughts
and keep it by your desk. Read one or two thoughts each day.
7. Contribute
Stand up for something that matters to you. Contributing, making a difference feels good. It boosts your self-esteem,
your gratitude and feeling of well being.
8. Get some time
I know this one is hard, especially if you are a single parent. But if you are determined, you can find some time every day to
just be. Make sure you do this - it will make a big difference in your ability to be happy.
9. Be in nature
Nature rejuvenates and restores the human spirit. Whether your brand of nature is mountains or the ocean, give yourself the
gift of visiting it frequently.
10. Be happy
No matter how many wonderful things you do to create a positive, happy, satisfied life, you could still end up unhappy.
Ultimately, happiness, gratitude, a feeling of satisfaction is a choice. People often do not choose happiness. Many feel
refusing to be happy will somehow get them what whey want, like a child holding his breath. Holding your breath will not get
your what you want. It is happiness that attracts.
