Welcome Letter
by Sibyl McLendon
Yá'át'ééh... O-Si-Yo... And welcome to another edition of MousePages,
the best little newsletter around! Yep, as you can see, I am feeling
fairly frisky this week. I have NO reason for this! In fact, it could
just be yet another brain cell imploding, but even though I have gotten
some undesirable news this week, I am cheerful. Even though it is about
104 here everyday, and our monsoon season has begun, so it is also
humid, I am smiling. Sweating, but also smiling. The muscles in my
legs are screaming from the unusual amount of work that I have done this
week, trying to get the new porch waterproofed before the monsoon ruined
it, yet I persevere. Why? Who knows? Maybe just because I am alive.
The sun is shining, the birds are singing, what the heck.
I was told this week that I have to stop smoking my beloved cigarettes.
For 30 years, the tobacco plant has been my pal, and now he has turned
on me. I am told that I have the beginnings of emphysema, and it is
time to say goodbye to my last and best addiction. Having also recently
given up caffeine and chocolate, I am reminded of a saying that my
Mother used to tell me: "When you have to give up all the bad stuff,
you don't really live any longer, it just feels that way." Then again,
my Mother dies at 68 from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder. I
want to live way longer than that. So, I am on a program to gradually
decrease the amount of cigs I smoke a day until, one month from now, I
am smoke-free.
It has been a real surprise to me how scary I find this. I am not
entirely sure what it is that I am afraid of. Maybe that I will find
that I can't do it. I sure hope that is not the case. I am not
too
sure what I will do with all the extra time, although I can think of
lots of things to do with the extra money! I wonder what I will do with
my hands? (No rude remarks, please) I guess I will just have to follow
this path to the end, and see where I am then. I would appreciate your
good thoughts, and any tips you may have that would help me with this.
You can write to me at navajo-@aol.com.
I have found a wonderful
on-line program, and if you are thinking of quitting, or trying to quit
like me, give it a look: http://www.trytostop.org
and it is from the
Massachusetts Department of Public Health. It is free, and I have found
it to be quite helpful, and non-judgmental. So, folks, wish me good
luck. I will keep you posted.
Be sure to go to the site this week and read the extra articles. The
one about if Dr. Seuss wrote technical articles is a jewel. Have a
wonderful week. And, the best of health to you all.

The Myth Of Custer's Last Stand
by Sibyl McLendon
June 25, 1876 125 years ago, General George Custer and his troops were
defeated and killed at Little Big Horn, Montana. History books portray
this as a "massacre" of loyal American Calvary troops by
"savages".
This is far from the truth.
American History books seldom tell the true facts of the war that the
American government declared against the aboriginal peoples of North
America. Completely overlooking the basic fact that North America was
an inhabited land when Europeans first came here, and the fact that the
near-annihilation of that indigenous population was perpetrated solely
to take their lands from them, White America's history portrays the
indigenous people of North America as ruthless and brutal savages.
History book authors do not seem to want to enlighten the general
population concerning the broken treaties, the stealing of land and
sacred places, the mass-extermination of entire cultures of aboriginal
people. The truth of torture, mutilation, rape and murder of the
peaceful indigenous population by government troops is nowhere to be
found.
Movies love to portray the "indian" as a savage brute, stealing women,
killing innocent settlers, scalping, torturing and brutalizing, all to
the steady beat of the "tom-tom" as they dance around a fire,
screaming
to celebrate their atrocities. This description fits the White Calvary
much better than it does the Native population. [It is not widely known
that scalping was taught to the indigenous culture by Europeans. Here
is a link to an article on that subject:
http://ct.essortment.com/historyscalpin_rdrp.htm
There are many well-documented incidents of Calvary troops mutilating
the dead bodies of fallen Native people:
http://www.rense.com/politics5/col.htm
(which also tells of the torture
and mutilation of Indians by Columbus' forces and priests)]
If a foreign group of people go to an inhabited area, then kill the
native population and take their land, is this not an act of war? When
this occurred in a European country, the native people fought back to
the last man to guard and protect their homes. Why, then, when the
indigenous people of North America fought back to protect their land, is
it referred to as savages attacking "innocent" settlers,
"massacres",
and butchery? Why is it not viewed as the invasion and destruction on
the North American native population by European invaders?
General Custer was a casualty of war. He was a bigoted fool, who
disobeyed orders and led his men to certain destruction. He had
displayed his bigotry before, by refusing to command a group of Black
calvary known as the Buffalo Soldiers. His hatred of any minority group
was well documented. He was only one of many commanders who led his men
to the complete annihilation of groups of Native peoples, including
women, children, babies and elders. John Seveir's oft-quoted battlecry
of "Nits make lice" made the killing of indigenous women and children
commonplace. L. Frank Baum, the "beloved" author of The Wizard Of OZ
wrote editorials in his newspaper calling for the complete annihilation
of the Native population.
That Sir Jeffrey Amherst in 1763 deliberately distributed smallpox
infected material to the Pontiac is common knowledge. What may not be
common knowledge is that this ensuing epidemic spread rapidly through
other tribes: "The deliberately induced epidemic quickly spread to the
northwest, claiming large numbers of Sioux and Plains Indians, crossed
the Rockies and inflicted huge death tolls among Native Americans from
southern California
all the way north to the Arctic Circle Tribes of Alaska. This
devastation was cited in the official WHO history of smallpox: Fenner,
Henderson, Arita, et al., (1988)".
There was a memorial erected at the site of the battle of the Little Big
Horn in 1946. It was called the "Custer Memorial" until recently. The
government finally figured out that it was insulting to the Native
American population to honor Custer for attempting to slaughter the
Native population, and to refer to it as a "massacre". There is going
to be an Indian Memorial built there by the National Park Service. Here
is a link to a site about that, you can donate money to help build it if
you like: http://www.nps.gov/libi/indmem.htm
Someday, maybe, history books will tell the true story of the conquering
of North America. They will tell children of the indigenous people who
lived here before the Europeans came. They will educate people about
the diverse cultures that inhabited this land before they were
systematically eliminated. They will tell of the struggle that American
Indians keep up even today to stop the enforced poverty, the racial
bigotry and loss of culture that we suffer in the 21st century. They
will chronicle the struggle to keep alive our culture, language and ways
of life. Someday, maybe, we will stop celebrating a national holiday
for Columbus, who brought only pain and destruction to an entire
continent of people. Maybe, someday, people will learn the truth about
us, that we are not and never were, ignorant savages who inflicted
suffering on the Europeans.
Do not celebrate this day. Do not plan a trip to the "celebrations"
planned for June 25th at the site of the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
Use that money instead to donate to the Indian Memorial. Do nothing to
help perpetrate the continuing racial bigotry against us as a people.
Rethink what it is you are celebrating on "Thanksgiving":

Thanksgiving day celebrates a massacre
Show that you are an enlightened being. Many noble people that you will
never meet will thank you for it.

The Moon Card
by Eagle Dancing
The Moon card shows a full moon overlooking a strange landscape. There
are two dogs howling, on the edge of water. A crab is crawling out of
the water. Two towers are visible in the background, as well as a path
leading into some mountains. The corresponding astrological sign for
the moon card is Pisces.
Interpretation
The moon belongs to the world of the psychic. You are entering a phase
of your life where you will be having vivid dreams, strong impressions
and, potentially, psychic abilities. Your creative side will become
stronger. Your subconscious is asserting itself. Go with the
flow.
Reversed
This is the darker side of illusion. Your emotions may be out of
control. Someone may be lying to you, or new opportunities may vanish.
Nothing is quite what it seems to be. Keep your business to yourself,
and beware of depression.

The Power Of Music
Trails of Freedom
(Bill Miller/Bob Corbin)
I dreamed I saw crazy horse, riding through the badlands he was wild and
brave and free
I swear I heard the cries of the innocent victims in the wind at wounded
knee
There's a trail of tears we could follow, can you hear the footsteps of
the Cherokee
Its a trail of broken promises, will you walk this trail with me
We can find america down the trail of freedom
Walk the way of my fathers from sea to sea
Oh can you find america, hear the drums of freedom
Gonna find it together, walk this trail
Walk the trail with me
I felt the Chippawa wind off Lake Michigan on a cold Chicago day
I heard the thunder of the Seminoles, way down in the everglades
And I've seen it in the beauty of a Navajo girl, like a flower in the
desert heat
And I've felt it in the pride of a Cheyenne dancer, as he moved to an
ancient beat
Oh can you find america down the trail of freedom
Walk the way of my fathers from sea to sea
Yeah we can find america, hear drums of freedom
Gonna find it together, walk this trail
Walk the trail with me
I walk the streets of Gallup, New Mexico on a saturday night
I watched my brothers fall to the alcohol, we were going down without a
fight
Hey brothers, we must walk with the pride of Chief Joseph, have the
courage of Geronimo
For this trail its long, so you have to be strong, just to find your way
back home
We can find america down the trail of freedom
Walk the way of my fathers from sea to sea
Oh can you find america, hear the drums of freedom
Gonna find it together, walk this trail
Walk the trail with me
